Would it be possible to buy a 40GB AppleTV and buy another 500GB 2.5" hard drive and swap out the 40GB for the 500GB somehow? Is there an online guide?

The best you can do ATM is a 320 gb PATA drive. Anything else requires a software hack to enable the USB port for hard drive use, or hardware hack using a PATA to SATA bridge. Look in the "My 750gb Apple TV" thread towards the end for a 500 gb 2.5" SATA drive option.

Nope, for some dumb reason Apple decided to put old technology PATA hard drives in the ATV. Since hard drive companies dont care about making them anymore, the biggest are 320, which I think its pretty big.

Opening the atv will void your warranty. It is easier to just connect an external uSB drive if you can live with an additional box beside your aTv.
