In preparation for next week, I wanted to familiarize myself with the ordering process in the Apple Store app.

AT&T now requires a passcode for accounts, and the Apple Store app is requesting it. No matter how many times I input the passcode, this same box appears, and the passcode is not accepted. Is anyone else seeing this error in the Apple Store app?

I hope this is fixed by next week!

you'll need to login at att.com and create a passcode.

go to att.com > myatt > profile > update my profile > AT&T Access ID Profile > Account Information

set up a passcode.

once completed, you can go back to the app and use the newly created passcode at the prompt you saw earlier.

That's the problem. I already created the passcode, but the Apple Store app isn't accepting the passcode. I can try to make a new one.

I tried this and it kept saying password is incorrect.

Maybe try again? I just tested it out and after creating a passcode and entering it in in the app, it continued my ordering process without a hitch.

Got a passcode on AT&T sight. Then checked on update availability on Apple Store app. Worked fine, showed correctly I just became eligible for Next upgrade buying from Apple and returning current 6+ to AT&T within 14 days. Interestingly, the latest AT&T payment posted today and the 12th of 20 Next payment showed up same day. So update was fast allowing use of Next again.

Once get new 6s+ will take old phone to AT&T Corporate store to turn in. Did same last year with 5s turned in for $300 credit. Had read some horror stories from people using mail in return. Returned phone did not get logged in at AT&T correctly, and was a mess to get corrected. The ten minute turn in process at the store provided instant feedback all was done correctly.

a bit OT but, for those who have signed up for NEXT, is it worth it? Can you keep the phone once you pay it off so it can be resold?

Yes you can keep phone once paid off, and AT&T will unlock it, just for asking, no cost.

However, you must pay off total amount, not just amount to get upgrade phone. I have made 12 payments so I can now upgrade to new phone and turn in old one. If I want to keep old phone I have to make the other 8 payments, as I still owe $380. Once I do, I own the phone.

Still no luck with me for the Passcode. I even changed my Passcode on AT&T's website, but nothing is changing in the Apple Store app. I just emailed Apple Support, so hopefully I hear something back.

I don't understand Next. I'm talking to someone at AT&T who is telling me my plan will be the exact same monthly cost, except that instead of paying the subsidized price of $300 for the 64Gb model, I'll pay the unsubsidized price of $750. I only upgrade every 2 yrs anyway because I like to keep my phone, so it makes perfect sense just to stick with the customary 2 yr obligation.

I feel like he's got it wrong (surely the monthly plan is lower to offset the fact you're paying an unsubsidized cost). If he's actually right, can someone explain to me why ANYONE would opt for Next? Do people just hate having money?

If you like keeping your phone for 2 years, then maybe Next isn't really for you. People like the idea of paying nothing up front, and having the cost split out amongst 12 or 18 payments, then after you've fulfilled those payments, you can trade it in for the next newest iPhone or whatever. If AT&T still offers 2 year plans, then by all means do so, but they are becoming a part of cell phone plan history.

If you are using a mobile share plan, then yes you do get a discount on the plan (in my case it's -$15 per line, i think it might be more if you pick a bigger data plan).

AT&T also likes to tack on a ton of "activation charges" if you stick with a 2 year plan, so keep that in mind (i think it's upwards of $45 now which is ridiculous). It used to be no fee for next, but it appears it's $15 for next now (boo):
https://www.macrumors.com/2015/07/22/att-activation-fee-rising-to-45/

AT&T charges me $42.45 for 12 installments on my monthly bill for an iPhone 6+ 64GB, so I pay about $510 for the year, and now when the new iPhone comes out soon, I'll order it and just give them this one back, and likely continue paying the same as i always have except now I have the newest again. No old phone to try and sell, no other worries.

Btw, for a $750 64GB iPhone 6, the monthly installment is $37.50 ($450)

What plan do you currently have? What are you currently paying? Are you on unlimited Data Plan? Is your current phone subsidized? When is your renewal date?

Here is what I currently have;
Family share plan, 15 GB data with balance from previous month rolled over. Unlimited calling, unlimited text. Two iPhones and one flip phone. Here are costs;
Share data........$100
iPhone one........$ 15 (Reduced by $25 due to data plan & Next)
iPhone two........$ 15 (Reduced by $25 due to data plan & Next)
Flip phone.........$ 10
Total Plan $140 plus taxes and fees

Both iPhone one and two, 6 Plus 128GB, on 12/20 Next plan. Paid tax up front with $949 split over 20 zero interest payments of $47.45 each. Can pay off any time. Trade in for new phone after 12th payment. Own phone after 20th payment. Payment for phones stops after 20th payment.

I can trade in phones, pay off phones, provide my own new phones. The Next payment plan is separate from the monthly phone plan, but shows on billing. If I retain the current phones after paying them off my phone plan remains $140 per month.

Two year costs keeping phones;
$1,005.94 iPhone one (949.00 phone + 56.94 tax)
$1,005.94 iPhone two
$0 flip phone
$3,360.00 (140.00 plan x 24 months)

$5,371.88 total

If I replace (trade in) both iPhones this month add $47.45 x 8 payments = 379.60. There may be an activation fee unless I can get them to wave it.

Do your math to see what is best for you.

There's a discount (based on how much data is part of the plan) to offset the monthly cost, although it won't offset all of the phone cost. And that only applies to the newer/current plans, not older ones which won't get that discount.

I found a way to make it work! I have to select "Replace another phone" instead of "Replace this iPhone" in the app.

I have an unlimited plan. Will using next screw me over?
Downgrading to less data is a no-go. I stream music when I'm in rush hour traffic so I hit 5 GB easily.

You'd be paying the full price for the phone essentially rather than the subsidized much smaller price if you were going with a contract.

I don't think so, because we have Next and we have the old Unlimited. But be careful, when we signed up for Next almost two years ago, they tried hard to talk us out of our unlimited plan. Make sure you're very clear you're not changing that and that they don't try and slip anything past you when signing you up for Next. I don't know what they are offering currently or what they are telling customers.

No, you just have to stress it that you want to continue with the unlimited.

I just recently did this but I returned the phone and I reverted back to my old contract. I'm seriously thinking of dumping ATT and the unlimited plan for JUMP. But, I haven't made a final decision.

I just planned to get next when I order the new phone. Hard to get annoyed by at&t there. :)
It'd be cool to have the choice to pay the phone off sooner than 2 years. I want to go to Germany next year with an unlocked 6s/6s+.
Haven't decided on the phone yet, but I'll likely get the 6S+.

Thanks to everyone for the reassurance.

So, I decided to give ATT another chance. Signed up for NEXT 12 months which I plan to pay off before the year is over.

I'm constantly switching devices so this seems to fit me best.

Yeah, I have an older unlimited plan and have no interest in downgrading to a limited data plan (I actually got a burner from Cricket just to get the extra talk time). It seems there is no discount for me and I'd just be paying substantially more by going with Next. To eastercat's point....you won't lose unlimited data, you'll just pay ~$350-450/year more for it.
