Upgrading from 6S Plus to the 12 Pro Max, how much will I miss Touch ID? I use phone frequently throughout the day especially for work. Assuming that everything is setup for Touch ID -- banking, restaurants, etc. will use Face ID, correct?

I have a 6S and I was waiting to know if the 12 would have Touch ID since I was also skeptical.
Since the 12 was announced without Touch ID I purchased a used 11 Pro and I was really surprised by Face ID. I don't miss Touch ID at all.

Never missed it once. Then masks happened and I don't work from home.

I'm a 3 year plus upgrader normally, currently have an 11 Pro. It's going in the draw/handed down if the 13 has Touch ID.

FaceID works everywhere TouchID works. However, in addition to the mask issues, FaceID only works in portrait mode on iPhones.

At worst, it means tapping your screen 4 times instead of 1 to unlock your phone if Face ID doesn’t work. I guess that’s kind of annoying, but will it ruin your life? YMMV.

(For the record I drastically prefer Touch ID but I don’t consider it a huge dealbreaker either way.)

When I switched to my first iPhone with Face ID (the iPhone 11) I thought I would miss Touch ID. I didn't at all as Face ID replaced everything Touch ID did (include bank app login, saved passcodes etc.) and was faster and effortless. I felt like I was using my phone without a passcode. The only exception is it doesn't work with a mask on, so with the mandatory mask in indoor public spaces bylaw in my city it now feels like 2012 when out at the grocery store and having to use a passcode.

Assuming you’re silly enough to have a 4 digit passcode.

Rumor mill is saying touch ID will be implemented into the screen on next years iPhone. Which is one of my biggest reasons for trying to hold off from upgrading this year.

Yes, I miss it. I find Face ID on the iPhone X to be fine under typical circumstances when using the phone around the house. As others have said, in the age of mask wearing it is a definite downgrade when out and about. It is also a downgrade at obscure angles, like when the device is lying on a table.

Touch ID has always worked perfectly for me - some used to complain of low recognition rates due to fingerprints that have degraded (usually job related.) So it really attempts to fix a problem that I didn’t have, which is a recipe for disappointment. I like the tactile feeling of unlocking the phone, and it is often faster than a face scan.

All said, Face ID isn’t enough of a downgrade where I stick with older tech, however. I appreciate the other advancements in the newer iPhones, particularly the rear camera. I would choose Touch ID if given the chance without other sacrifices, but in weighing all pros and cons I can accept Face ID to get the other new stuff.

The current plan is to get a 12 mini and trade it in at the year mark if the 13 has the return of Touch ID under the screen.
