Agonizing over my upgrade decision - I need to replace my 6s quickly due to a faulty mic making it almost useless. I will be buying (2) of whatever I get to keep my wife happy as well.

X is in stock locally at $899 + verizon $700 off if I buy 2
XS is on backorder with a estimated Oct 10th arrival but only estimated of course

I am leaning toward saving $200 by going for two X's. I am a really into photography and almost always have my camera kit with me so the minor XS camera upgrades while nice are not necessary.
I like the XS having a 4x4 mimo but realistically in my semi rural area I doubt verizon will ever roll out advanced LTE.

Are there any compelling features I am missing on the XS that should make me reconsider getting an X?

The real push for me is that I am traveling heavily mid October and would love to have a new device sooner than later since having a conversation on my current phone is very difficult. The I leave Oct 13 so if the XS deliver date gets pushed at all it would be weeks before I could pick it up.

Input appreciated before I made mistake.

At the end of the day, IMO, and assuming you are committed to iOS, the decision comes down to:
Do you buy the latest and greatest?
Are you happy buying an older model?
If you buy the X and plan to keep it for two years, but if you buy the XS you would keep it for 3, then the XS would be a better choice.
The new phone every year is objectively better than the previous year.
Buying last year's model every 3 years will be cheaper than buying the latest model every 3 years.

It’s a higher ram, and is a great camera compared. And it’s easy connectivity. Ummm I went from a iPhone 7 to the xs

Not considering the XR at all? That seems to be what I'm going to get. Although my carrier still has some iPhone X left which is tempting.

Me too - iPhone 7 to XS. I has a 6+ and decided it was too uncomfortable in my pockets, so went with the 7 last year. I think it adjusted my expectations, so the XS has so far been the perfect combination of screen size and pocketability.

I bought a used X with 256GB storage for $680.. and I don't need to add additional lines and deal with rebates. Something to consider.

XR does seem like a good middle ground, especially if price is a factor: XR is considerably cheaper, but newer, so (theoretically) it will be usable for a year longer than the X. But - while I (obviously) can't answer for OP - if he needs a phone ASAP, the XR might be out of contention. Although, if he's considering waiting until October 10th for the backordered XS, he might as well wait until the 26th for the XR. It's only a couple more weeks, for a device he'll live with for a long time.

@OP - my vote was for the XS. Yeah, it's $200 more, but you'll get another year of life out of it. Assuming you keep the phone for a couple years, I think that's a fairly small price to pay.

If you stuck with a 6S for this long, you evidently don’t mind not having the latest and greatest so probably not much need for you to pay the extra for the XS.

My practical advice would be to hold on for the XR.

My personal advice - the XS is the best iPhone I’ve owned. Go for it.

How would I get an another year of life from the XS over the XR? They were put out the same year and have many of the same specs.

Either phone will be nice. The XS is about the same physical size as the 6S but with a bigger screen. In that way I’m familiar with how it feels in the hand. But the XR is bigger and therefore has a bigger screen which would be nicer to read on. Plus the latter is cheaper.

No. I meant another year of usability for the XR versus the X. Just like XS. I was comparing XR & XS to X (as was OP's original comparison). Both newer phones share this advantage over the X. Hope that makes sense

I really wish I was brave enough to do that. There are a ton of good used deals out there but with my luck I would end up getting scammed. It seems the going scam is to sell a phone that is insured and then report it stolen a few days later. The buyer ends up with a bricked phone and the seller makes off like a bandit. I would definitely be willing to buy used if i could be sure.

Oh my. Well, this was off of craigslist and the girl was just upgrading to the XS Max.. paid it off and unlocked it for me, so I felt pretty safe. But I sure would feel bad if I got ripped off :/

eBay is a good way to go, if you want a used X and find a good deal. The combined eBay and Paypal protection, plus buying from a reputable seller with good feedback..you would be very hard pressed to get ripped off. They nearly always side with the buyer, if such a case would come up.

My vote is for the XS - you clearly don't upgrade your phones very often. The benefit here is the faster FaceID - which given some observations I've read here, the X version of FaceID is too slow for some, but the improved FaceID doesn't seem to have any complains about speed.

Here's something that isn't clear to me: is FaceID actually faster on the XS, or was the speed increase due strictly to iOS 12? I've read that people have experienced faster FaceID on the X after updating. But I have no idea if that's true.

I do know that Apple didn't specifically state that the XS includes "2nd gen" FaceID. They tend to mention these things, as they did with 2nd gen TouchID. So, theoretically, the FaceID hardware is identical on the two devices. But, again, I really don't know.

I went back to buy the X and the store had just received a new shipment of XS. I am the proud owner of a new XS now. Awesome upgrade from my 6s and as soon as I quit pressing the non existent home button I think I will like it :)

Thanks everyone!
