I've been using an intel MacBook Pro (2019 version) and feels like I should go for an upgrade.
How good are the performance of latest MBA models compared to what I'm currently using?
Would you recommend a MBA model that would feel like proper upgrade in terms of performance?

These are the specs of my current MBP:
2.3 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9
AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 4 GB
Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB
16 GB 2667 MHz DDR4

I'm using the computer mostly for:
iOS / Flutter app development (for side projects)
Backend software development with Elixir/Phoenix (for side projects)
General web browsing

Any advice is much appreciated ❤️

I have good news for you friend.

It's not for nothing that the M-series chips got universally positive reviews. Even a base model M1 offers a significant leap forward from the i9 chip. This is true in raw metrics like single core performance, but even more so in the delight in having a machine that is silent and has great battery life, but also has serious performance.

I'd probably get an M2 at this point, unless your budget is really tight. Exactly what configuration depends on how much you want to spend. The upgrade prices for RAM and storage really hurt! Personally, I'd consider 16GB a must, and I would consider going to 24GB. 512GB of storage is certainly nice too. Obviously you can't add either RAM or storage later, but at least if you need more storage at a later date you have other options like the cloud, a local SSD, a NAS, etc.

Please note, Apple Silicone Mac is more efficient in memory usage than intel-based Mac. You probably need 16gb RAM at most (as your current intel is 16gb).

Usually when people move to Silicone Mac, they are trapped into upgrade the RAM which they didn’t use with the cost of using external disk due to low storage.

You'll be quite happy with the performance boost and insanely good battery life on these machines. The air will definitely still be a nice step up for you

I have a similar spec 2019 MacBook and my M2 Air significantly outperforms the Intel MacBook in performance, battery life, portability, noise, etc. Based on my workflow, the MBA is a big upgrade.
