Hello,

I was able to get a iBook G4 from Goodwill for $13 over the weekend and want to upgrade it to SSD was looking around at the best options not sure how to do it.

Will the following work in this mac?

Thanks

Congrats on the iBook. :)

Using a current mSATA SSD in an mSATA-to-IDE adapter is indeed the recommended route.

The enclosure you picked uses a JMicron JM20330 chipset. Searching this subforum for “JM20330” brings up a few users’ reports of it working with various PPC Macs. It’s limited to 1.5Gbps, so make sure the SSD you use can step down to SATA I speed.

I was looking at the following drives https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09KF92ZJ3/ref=ewc_pr_img_1?smid=A1U4879GZA4BL0&psc=1 or https://www.amazon.com/SK-hynix-BC7.../B08ZBTW15S/ref=psdc_1292116011_t3_B07GZLJD5R i have no idea where to look to see if they can step down. Sorry for asking so many questions.

I have an iMac 2009 and FireWire Cable 800 to 400 so I can mount the iBook on my iMac. Just trying to make this as cheap as I can.

I have always used DogFish mSATA with that same enclosure without issue

I am currently using this set-up in four PowerBooks and an external FireWire drive.

All SATA SSDs are required to be able to step down. In most cases this works just fine. But there have been edge cases where some SATA III SSDs on some SATA controllers — such as those used in G5s — didn’t reliably step down…
