i ended up getting iTunes Match yesterday.. not all my songs were matched but i do like having the ability to just turn on match on my iPad and not worry about exceeding my storage.. i do have one question tho.. i turned the match on my iphone- would i be able to stream over tmo network? and if so does that go under my monthly data?
If the music isn't downloaded locally to your phone than you will be using your data.

No, they won't ever be added to the purchased section of your iTunes account unless they were there in the first place. If you're going to end your subscription you'll want to download everything from iTunes Match on to your computer before it expires. Once something gets matched and you download it locally, you own it.

In this case it were songs that were previously purchased when it was still 128k and DRM so I think they will be upgraded but I don't know for sure (I never bought DRM'd songs)

Thanks for the info man . Will probably just use it to upgrade my library then.

Well this just seems all very convoluted so I'm now more confused then ever. I think I'll stick to upgrading my remaining songs (35 songs) one by one. Seems like the easiest way for me to do it.

After iTunes Match replaces lower bit files with the Apple 256k AAC versions do they count as being purchased? Can I download them later from the purchased section from my iPhone or iPad after the 1 year subscription ends?
No, however there is a small caveat. If you download a song through match it will appear (from a file perspective) as a purchased song. Meaning that it will now have your account info embedded in it and it will say "purchased by" as one of the metadata fields. This can be stripped out of the file, but it is there.

One thing I am curious about though. If I do sign up for Match and upgrade select songs to 256k will though songs remain on my Mac hard drive if I cancel my Match subscription?? The same question applies for the upcoming Apple Music service as well.

Anythin

Anything you have upgraded to 256k and have downloaded to your machine will stay on your machine in 256k, even after your Match subscription runs out.. They won't touch your local files

As for Apple Music? No clue whatsoever

So if I upgrade my music to 256k it will be the same as if I purchased them??

Assuming it is matched, then 100% the same as bought through the iTunes store! The only difference will be in the metadata you put in yourself, that stays even if you download a matched song

What kind of metadata would I put in that is not already there?

Could be anything really. You could decide to put in another piece of cover art, to a different spelling or put in or leave out the disc numbers. I was trying to say that even though the music you download will be 100% the same as the one you'd buy, it won't have the metadata that the bought version would have. It keeps your metadata, so if you have no metadata the matched song will also have no metadata... And if you have a long comment in there e.g. the downloaded match song will have that

So all it does is upgrade the song file to 256k but keeps everything else the same.

Yes! That's a much simpler way of saying it!! :D

Well I took the plunge and signed up for Match. The initial process takes quite a while. I have 30gb of music. But it kept stopping because I think my Mac went to sleep. I started it last night and this morning it still wasn't finished.

Well I'm gonna re-rip all my CDs in AAC 256k. Anything left over which is not ripped from my CDs or iTunes download I'll deal with after.
