There is an instruction to install the patched OS using a usb 2.0 hub, because Sonoma doesn't support the usb 1.1 protocol that is part of the Mac Pro 5,1 build. This is fixed with a post install root patcher, so all the usb ports work again. But does this hub need to be powered, or not? Seems to me to be a crucial piece of information to have before starting the search for a usb 2.0 hub. Does anyone know for sure?

The USB 2 hub does not need to be powered.

I used an Apple A1243 keyboard which has two built-in USB ports (USB 2 hub). With the mouse plugged directly into the keyboard, both functioned during the installation process.

I know it's been a hot minute but this did NOT work for me using an A1048 keyboard, even the 2005 model that's ostensibly a 2.0 hub. Just in case that saves anyone any time.

So what ended up working for you finally? I was planning to install Sonoma on my MacPro 5,1 with non metal GPU with OCLP 2.0.1 and was planning to get a USB 2.0 hub. In the OCLP website, they said that some USB 2.0 hub may not work and I was looking for suggestions!

If I may...

Yesterday I successfully did a clean install of Sonoma (onto a separate SSD) without any issues so far (except no bluetooth). I'm using a thrift store Dell keyboard and mouse plugged into a $14 Sinefine PCI-E to USB 3.0 Expansion Card, and using a NXT thumb drive plugged like usual into the front of the 5,1 (2010).

The only slight problem with OCLP was that it seemed to automatically choose the wrong drive during the first restart and so I just pulled the drives with Monterey, and Catalina etc. It was then as easy an installation as I could imagine. I didn't have to reset the NVRAM or anything.
