Alright. So I have a MacPro 1,1 desktop in addition to a newer laptop... I haven't been using the MP much since the support for applications I need to use and sync across devices was cut to 10.6.8 (Google Drive, Dropbox, Chrome..). I'd like to get it to a newer OS so I can continue using those programs... I have hit dead ends and have given up on this before, being told it wasn't possible. However, it seems there are folks on this forum that have figured it out. But I'm heckin' overwhelmed and confused. If possible, I would like to do this without changing the hardware.

Please dumb this down for me so I can justify having this giant computer in my apartment again...

El Capitan is the most recent macOS version that you can run with a MP1,1 or MP2,1. This is the thread that you need to read:

2006/2007 Mac Pro (1,1/2,1) and OS X El Capitan

Btw, you will need a newer GPU.

Yeah. I saw the thread. I got really overwhelmed by it. I guess I'm wondering what's needed for the upgrade vs what's wanted to improve performance and upgrade the OS. So I need a new GPU... do I need to replace the processors too? It seems like maybe that's ideal.. but does it need to happen?

Just the GPU.

I'm new to the forum. I was wondering if someone can help me out. I'm upgrading the processors on my Mac Pro 1,1 to a 2,1 (quad core processor). Should I install the processors first then upgrade the firmware or firmware first? Thanks in advance.

Upgrade the firmware first. If you upgrade the processors first you will be installing unsupported processors.
