    Hi Everyone,

I am currently using my early 2006 iMac with an Intel Core Duo processor. I have read several guides online on how to access the processor (taking apart the case, etc), and I am confident I am capable of undertaking the task. After reading this guide I feel like I will be able to do it myself (with the help of my electrical/mechanical engineering friend (still hasn't decided his major yet! I'm a physics student, so I should be capable as well, ha! Anyways as you can see, that guide gives very little information as to what CPUs can be used. I looked up the processor that they used in the guide (the T5600) and all of the results came up for a mobile processor. I have heard in the past that most of Apple's desktops contained "laptop grade" hardware, so it would make sense if it contained mobile components.
Anyways, onto the real question! I want to know if I can use this processor instead when doing the upgrade and if I can't, why not/what's the limiting factor. I would like to pump up the power even further if possible, but if not I can stick with the cheaper T5600 chip.
A little more about my setup:
    - Early 2006 iMac Intel Core Duo @ 1.83 GHz
    - Display - 17"
    - Memory - 1 GB
    - HD - 160 GB

    Thanks!

    one more thing!

    Sorry,

I forgot to mention the reason I thought of this CPU (T7600) in particular.

I thought it might work because it uses the same socket (Micro-FCPGA) as well as same power consumption, 34 W.

    Please help!

    Thanks again

Not sure about the exact processor model number but any number of folks have upgraded to C2D...you can go up to 2.33 GHz I believe. While you've got it apart you really should bump the RAM up to 2GB also.

    Hmmm...

I suppose that answers my question as the processor I linked to is 2.33 GHz.

I'll wait for some more replies just to obtain a general consensus.

    Thanks! :)
