If my ATI x1900 worked in Linux, my 8800gt would be for sale. The 8800gt does bring joy in Linux, and Mac now....Windoz Vista64, sux......I have tried every possible driver for Vista.....sux

I still have my x1900...anyone have luck selling these monsters, and for how much?

My 8800 runs great. I have a Samsung 32 Flat panel TV 1080i hooked up to it.
It's looks great. I'm curious about the new ATI card though. My curiosity is more focused on driver support for the ATI and if theres gonna be a way to over clock it. Apple doesn't like over clocking. :(

No news to read on our 8800gt replacement?

Are you joking! I thought the HD 3870 that is due to come out will not be as powerful as the 8800gt (apart maybe for 'core' graphics). I'm very happy with my 8800gt - had enough stress for a lifetime hoping that it would come out and now I'm not going to worry about graphics cards or anything to do with the power of my Mac Pro until you can buy one that's 4 times as powerful for about £1000. At that point I might think about a new graphics card - but at least I will hopefully be a bit more on the ball after this 8800 fiasco.

I'm not buying it anyway, I'm happy with my 8800gt. Just wish it ran better in Vista 64, and don't care for the flashing to blue screen after waking my MONITOR. My Mac Pro has never been to sleep, but the monitors are set to power down after 30 min. Then the flash from blue to my desktop twice and then work fine. This has never happened under windoz or Linux.

Is there any proven/reported way to use a 8800GT in an old (2007 that is) Mac Pro except to buy a super expensive one from apple? I just dont want to pay double the streetpize for an identical card (ye different bios but come on....).

Double the price?

It's $279 for Apple's vs. $205 or so for the PC version in the USA.
You may want to wait for the Radeon HD 3870 if you work mostly in OSX and use programs that use a lot of core image. It's going to be priced at $219 and should be available sometime in the next few weeks. Go to barefeats site to see their test results, then you can make an informed decision on which card best suits your needs.

What version of 8800gt do I have?

I just got my 8800gt and installed it in my 1st gen Mac Pro to find that I get no display, although the system appears to boot up. I came across this thread to find their are 2 versions of the 8800gt out there, the 1st gen and early 2008. How do I know what card I got? I ordered it from a distributor so it wasn't as clear as it is at the apple store.

I am running OSX 10.5.3 so I assume that Leopard Graphics Update 1.0 is already part of this version. Is there anyway to tell which card this is, before I send it back?

Somewhere in this thread someone posted the part numbers of the two cards. That should be on your delivery invoice.

(I checked the store for you)
The one you wanted is MB560Z/A for 2007 macs
the one you don't want is MB137Z/A for 2008 macs.

Thanks for that info. I have the wrong card! I wish I knew there were 2 versions before I bought it.

I have a PC version of 8800 GTS from BFG.

Is there anyway I can have both Mac OS and Windows XP?

I've already gotten rid of the harddrive with Mac OS on it and put a new fresh one just for XP use. But it'd be great if I can get mac osx with it.

Do they have a new technology now that I can use?

Well my 2.66 Mac Pro needs a new logic board and a power supply. Get this the Apple Genius thinks it was my GeForce 8800 video card that was causeing my problems and gave me a x1900 WTF!!!!! To top it off they sent my Nvidia card back to Apple. None the less a new 8800 card is on order. Better be the right number. And why do I see the 2.66 on the refurb page on Apples site all the time? I am mad about this. My Apple is a 'Sour Apple" [a.k.a. a lemon].

Calm down. It's not the end of the world, he made a perfectly human mistake, and did you have to order the new 8800 or is Apple doing that for you?

As for why there are 2.66 GHz Mac Pros for refurb, well, I'd assume it's from people trading up to a newer Harpertown-based Mac Pro. What's to be mad about it?
