so i was wondering if its possible to upgrade from say windows vista to windows 7 in VM fusion, like i have a windows 7 upgrade thing i can use but wasnt sure if thats even possible to do since its a VM and not like having vista installed via bootcamp.

Sure you can upgrade Vista -> 7, but it really doesn't matter.
You can perform a clean install of W7 from your upgrade media (even just an ISO) in VMWare following the procedure described here: http://www.winsupersite.com/win7/clean_install_upgrade_media.asp
