Ok so I have a 2012 Quad Core Mac Mini that's got 4GB ram as standard. My MacBook Pro has 16GB (I upgraded a while back). My question is, can I mix one of the 8GB sticks with one of the 2GB sticks in each machine to give me 10GB in each machine. Will I suffer as a result of not having matching sticks?

Assuming it's the mid 2012 PC3-12800/1600MHz MBP then yep, you can split the memory between the two computers.

There's a minor performance hit in having unmatched pairs, but you'd have to be really looking for it to notice it.

Yup, I second this. I have 10gb running right now. Just installed an 8gb stick 2 days ago.

Ran geekbench 3 and got a drop in performance. Around 400~ in multicore and 150~ in single core scores.

But I definitely didn't feel the performance hit in my daily usage though. I'm using around 9.5+ Gb of ram right now with no swap. I'm pretty happy with my purchase.

16gb is overkill for me but I'm probably gonna do it anyways in a few months.
