Hi guys pretty new to my mac and notice the spinning wheel a few times,

So some questions if you can help me please.

I have the base 2011 Imac so it is 4gb Ram which is 2x2 I believe?

    So questions are

    1) what's the max ram I can install.

    2) if I intend to get 16gb, is 4x4 or 2x8 better as I believe there are 4 slots?

Many thanks for your help in advance.

as stated on Apple web page where you buy memory ram from them:

How much memory would Apple recommend?
    >Word processing,e-mail,simple graphics =1 Gb.
    >Advance graphics and gaming,photo editing=2 Gb.
    >Multimedia editing,3-D modeling= 2Gb+.

Some computers can run more ram than apple states in the official specs. Here is a good site that will tell you the "real" maximum memory:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/memory/maxram

    On the 2011 imac it is 32gb (8gb x 4)

    ----------

I would just buy the 8gb x 2, set keep the 2gb x 2 in the other slots, and you will have 20gb. When you want/can afford to max the memory, you can just replace the original set with another 8gb x 2.
