We have the ATV4 in our living room and absolutely love it. We have the ATV3 in our bedroom since we don't have a cable box in there and it works quite well. I have the opportunity to pick up a gently used ATV4 for $100.

We are on the brink of cutting the cable cord completely, so not being limited to the apps on our ATV3 would be plus.

Given the opportunity, would you upgrade the ATV3 to the ATV4 even if you already have one in another room?

Since you have both I would think you would be the best to answer that question. But $100 is a pretty good deal (assuming on the 32gb model). I was going to only buy a couple ATV4 and keep ATV3 for other TV's. I am now all in on the ATV4 because of my requirements which may only be good for me.
I recommend you figure out what you will need to only use the ATV4 in the living room after cutting the cord. And does that setup require you to get an ATV4 for the other room. Some feel that they can simply drop Live TV and simply use Netflix and Hulu which work fine on the ATV3. So, really hard to say what you need.

Yes, it is the 32GB model.

We essentially use both ATV's the same. We have Netflix and Hulu and use cable log in for Food Network, MTV, ESPN, etc.

The reason I'm considering the ATV4 for the bedroom is strictly for the App Store. Especially when we cut the cord. We won't be necessarily tied down to the apps pre-installed on the ATV3.

The only reason I'm considering the upgrade is for the price I can get the ATV4.

Personally, I wouldn't upgrade until you actually want to use an app or feature that is missing on the 3. I'm still running my ATV3 on my main projector setup and see no reason to change yet, especially since some of the ATV3 apps are better than their ATV4 counterparts IMO (looking at you, Netflix, Hulu and HBO) and it doesn't have glitches like the reduced dynamic audio range. I use an ATV4 downstairs, mainly because apps like Infuse and MrMC are handy to stream content from my NAS (I don't need that on the main setup, since I also have an HTPC with Kodi there).

As far as price is concerned, you can currently buy a brand new ATV4 with an HDMI cable for $120 at Radioshack. There will be other sales in the future, and Apple will also offer refurbished units at some point.

If there isn't an app now that you want in both rooms I would wait. Odds are the used market for ATV4 will be more robust in the future, meaning cheaper. And though the atv3 is basically dead (evidence it doesn't support apple music).

I'm also guessing there will also be either a new product and/or price drop to fill in the gap between the $70 and $150. $150 seemed a bit much for a streaming box with a year old processor. Maybe atv4 will drop to $100 and atv5 will be 4k with an A9.

I appreciate all of the replies. After doing some thinking, I think we're going to hold on to ATV3 in the bedroom for now. There isn't an app we're really missing and we spend most of our time in the living room anyway. Ideally I would like to pick one up when they are below $100, so if I can hold out a little bit, I'm sure a retailer will offer a sale on it a couple months down the line.
