Hi All,

I'm currently running macOS 14.8.4 on an Intel Mac Mini (2018).

I have two questions which I think are related (although they might not be).

Firstly, over the last couple of days I've lost about 20GB of HD space leaving me with only about 5GB of free space. At the same time I getting a nag to Upgrade to Sequoia 15.7.4. I suspect that Sequoia has downloaded in the background although I've done quite a bit of searching and can't find it. Download Updates Automatically was on but Install was off.

I'm not keen of upgrading because the Mini forms part of a music studio and it's likely that the upgrade will cause various bits of hardware and software to stop working.

So, has this Upgrade swallowed up my free HD space and if so, how can I get it back?

Cheers!

Also, if I click on the "Upgrade Now" button in System Settings I get the licence agreement, not a download option, which makes me think it's already downloaded in the background.

Suggestion for the future:
TURN OFF the option to "download updates automatically".
but also...
BE AWARE that after OS updates, these days you have to go to the software update pane and re-check that such options have not been automatically "re-enabled" behind your back...

I'm pretty sure that I had disabled "download updates automatically" but I'm not 100% sure. This all seems to have happened after a recent update so maybe the update pane was reset - I can't believe Apple would do something like that but after some more research, seems like it can happen.

Whatever else you are doing:
• Back up immediately.
• Make more room on the system drive. It is badly overfilled, which puts it at elevated risk for a crash.

I suggest offloading many files to an external drive. Enough to keep the system drive 50% to maximum 80% full.

Note that the Mac OS Software Update process is very confusing, possibly intentionally by Apple to try to sandbag us into upgrading into major new OS versions. IMO it is flat rude, a very bad look for Apple. E.g. when I go to "Software Update tonight" Apple does not tell me whether it will be updating to Sequoia 15.7.4 (my intention) or to Tahoe (not my intention).

You can still hide Tahoe with a configuration profile and avoid unwanted upgrades.
