If I have an Intel app, will the app automatically update itself when a native or universal version is available or will I need to re-download a new version?

Depends on the app. If you downloaded from the Apple store, you will receive a notification.

Most other applications periodically check themselves for the latest version, but not all.

I thought Chrome was native. If I do a check for update in settings it says up to date yet it’s still the Intel version.

They paused it, but they also didn’t push the release. I guess they knew it wasn’t stable.

I can only assume that Google was not given one of the ARM development kits so they could be prepared when the M1 machines were eventually released.

If you go to the website of Google Chrome and click Download, you can choose between the Intel-only version and the Universal version (“Google Chrome for Apple Silicon”). I guess eventually they will update the Intel version to that one as well.

Note that the universal version is much larger in file size.
