upgrading to new firmware

Hello all, i am in Canada... Vancouver to be specific. I have just gotten an old iphone 2g from a friend and it's running firmware 1.1.3 on it. I want to upgrade to the latest firmware, but still be able to throw a fido sim card in to it. What do i have to do?

I've heard of people upgrading just using itunes to the latest firmware, and it keeps the phone unlocked, it's just not jailbroken??
