Smart choice... I'm surprised nobody just ran the basics... Video on the 4S is about 178 mbs per minute which totals about 10gb per hour... So that alone would put you in needing 32gb just to be safe! Any apps you use would update and gain in file size too along the way. New photos would clock in at about 1.7 gb per 500, and who knows, the file could even be HIGHER with the new iPhone. Best luck to you!!

My iPhone 4 was a 32GB. I went with a 16GB on my 4S, thinking cloud was "the future". With data rates skyrocking I couldn't have been more wrong. I am getting whatever the highest capacity is next time around and putting this thing to bed. hopefully we get USB 3.0 (or something faster than 2.0) syncing as well.

Always get more than you think you need. I thought I needed a 32, and this past week I had to un-cache some stations on Slacker so I could install an app update on my 64GB.

If an hour of video is clocking in at 10GB, then you are encoding your videos incorrectly. High quality, properly encoded videos should be about 400MB per hour... for playback on the device itself.

Going with the 32GB model this time around. Recording video will more than likely eat up space more than the 4S, so the 32GB will be perfect.

Sorry I didn't clarify but you assumed I was talking about encoding videos myself and adding them to the phone but I was referencing recording video with the iPhone itself... 1080p video clocks in at about 10gb per hour. So it can add up pretty quickly.

I dunno if you've decided already. This thread hasn't been closed so I hope my idea's still welcome.
Are you already in university? If yes, then the 32 Gig is way better, if, and only if, you’re gonna put your academic needs into consideration. If you wanna have extra space for that then I think that it’ll all be worth it. But if you want extra space just for multimedia needs like movies, music and games, I think 16 gig is fine. I don’t wanna sound like I am underestimating our multimedia needs as these have kept me sane since I gotta hold of my iPhone. Lol. Then again, it depends on your reason WHY you are upgrading that you should consider first before buying one just for extra storage. Good luck to your studies and on your part-time job! I hope my younger bro would also have that trait of working his a*s off to save then buy for the stuffs he wanted and not to just ask from our dear folks.

Oops. You are correct. Thank you for the clarification. Indeed, recording video on the phone itself will quickly fill the space up.

Most of us have been a student without a lot of cash, but $100 over two years is less than skipping a $5 meal once a month. For something you will use several times a day, you will get way more use out of the 32gb than any taco bell meal :)

One more year until I'm off to college/university, but I do use my iPhone for schoolwork and the reason I'm upgrading is because I've had my iPhone 4 for a while now and I have an upgrade and I feel that the iPhone 5 will suit me perfectly. I've 99% decided on the 32GB iPhone 5 or whatever it's called and will give my dad my iPhone 4.

That's true. I've 99% sure I'm getting the 32GB now and just like I figured, taking videos/pics on the new iPhone will take up considerably more space than pics/videos taken on the iPhone 4, which is all the more reason to go with the 32GB.

It's funny because it Apple decides to make the next iPhone start with a 32GB capacity, this whole discussion effectively becomes moot. Hopefully this is what they do... Please, Apple.

When I got the new iPad I went with 16GB this time, mostly because of cost. I already had an iPad 1 and 2. Getting 16GB was a huge mistake. I'm constantly fighting with a nearly full device. I have to be very careful about what I do with video and I have to balance which large apps are on it at any time (such as Audubon and GPS navigation apps). I know you're dealing with decisions about a phone but you may very well have the same kinds of issues.

The phone is a lot worse than the tablet for storage space, since you have to factor in music, GPS, cached content, podcasts, audiobooks, and many more apps.

I plan on getting the 32GB when the new iPhone comes out. I have a possessed droid at the moment. However I do have the new iPad in 16GB, that I feel I'm constantly watching how much space I'm using. On my iPad I have 19 apps installed and I have 10.2GB left. This includes absolutely no music, video or pictures. With all the pictures I receive via txt of my nieces, there is no way a 16GB phone would work for me.

It's better to have more space, than not enough.

Thanks everyone for the discussion. I too was debating between 16 and 32. After reading this, now I'm wondering between 32 and 64. 32 is good.
