My strategy is avoiding adding custom package sources until the upgrade is completed, and installing all available updates to Ubuntu before initiating the upgrade. I will be performing the upgrade over Ethernet since Wi-Fi doesn't work without a driver, and Ethernet's faster anyway. The Mac being used for this is an Intel Rev. D (Early 2008, iMac 8-1).

Are there any other things (pre- or post-upgrade) that I should look out for?

EDIT: Oh, forgot to mention, Ubuntu is the only OS on this Mac - which is fine since Apple's not going to release firmware updates for it anymore.

Ah sigh. The upgrade worked but the OS is now unusable - Unity fails to load post-upgrade, so things like the dock and menus don't display. It's still possible to reboot/shut down via Ctrl+Alt+T and entering bash commands, which is what I had to do once I realized this wasn't going to work as intended. Oh well.
