When the day arrives for usb 3.0, is it possible to upgrade with the new imac's? i know it's a hardware change and I don't know how this machine opens up. I just wanted to make 100% sure this can be done. thank you.

sorry, this may be a dumb question. But does anyone know? can you with the older imac's? it's been a while for me and the 3.0 is going to be killer in a few months.

usb and most other ports are components of the mother board and are not designed to be replaced... hope that answers your question... :)

The only machine you will be able to do this on is the Mac Pro.

Simply due to the fact that it has slots available for this purpose.

The USB3 will likely be part of the next generation I/O chip in Intels next mobile chipset.

These chipsets generally aren't plug and play replacements for the previouse generation and require new logic boards/motherboards.

For a PC this isn't a huge expense, for an Apple computer you are looking at $1000 minimum if Apple doesn't change part locations, wiring, heatsinks.

Generally less expensive to sell the entire machine - eat the loss - and buy a new one.
