Upgrading... What can I expect?

I used a white Macbook 2.16 core 2 duo macbook from 2007 until September 2012 when I bought the same laptop that you will buy. I am so happy with it. Everything runs so much faster. Going from Intel gma graphics to Intel HD 4000 is a HUGE jump.

Massive speed improvements on just about everything. Were you still running Tiger on it? I upgraded from my early 2006 15" last year to a late 2011 15" and was happy with pretty much everything, though I miss Tiger over ML and SL still. Hope it goes well, you won't regret it.
 
Improvements all over the board, but still stuck with a slow mechanical HDD lol.
 
You are definitely going to notice the slowness of the HDD.
I recommend just getting a 256GB SSD.
It really does speed up your computer.
