WHy is OLED a no go for some? I am a complete novice so trying to absorb as much info as possible before deciding where to go from my iphone 6. To the untrained eye, what are the differences between OLED and LCD?

It’s mainly a no go for some in apple phones as the way the OLED screen projects its image causes headaches for a small percentage of people. Search these forums for eye-strain and you’ll see there’s a fair few people affected.
And then decide that an extra £150 is worth it to be more future proofed, therefore getting th xs.
That’s the dilemma I’m currently grappling with!

I love color and I don’t use A case. I have 8+ and will consider the xr. I think it may Even be cheaper per month.

Your opinion is completely contrary to what the professionals show in studies about OLED vs LCD even in mobile phones. People can have individual preferences, and issues such as eye strain, but you're opinion isn't sound. This thread is an X to XR comparison, but you stated that OLED is a big downgrade from LCD.
It is. Displaymate only checks technical parameters but ignores the pwm of the screen completely as they do ignore the problems with burn in and aging - especially the blue channel.

According to the studies I've seen, you would need to display the same image for 510 hours straight in order to get burn in on an iPhone X. At this point, aging beyond that is completely inconclusive on that device.
Also, PWM can be altered to be PWM free in all lighting conditions, according to this article that someone posted here in 3 clicks in the settings and accessibility:

510h is no problem to reach- it’s only 2.5h per day over 204 days. Prime candidates are the signal strength bars, the clock and other icons in the status area.

That's continual running. Also don't know if Apple is not using pixel shifting like other oled phones do. Have you seen examples of burn in?

Ok, so this big issue is this eye strain. Funny, last year it was burn-in, now its eye strain. It's aways something. 😉
I'll test this myself (just to take sides with this exciting argument). Very easy to test, btw. I'll read any content on the Max. If after half hour there's any discomfort, it's a problem. note: A half hour, I figure, is about right, as any longer than that, the eye strain could just be the result of other things. (I'm curious as to others experience with extended reading).
Also, there's now a growing, very vocal, anti-OLED crowd. Since this isn't an Apple issue, per se, I'm wondering how this is spread out over other manufactures related forums.
Finally, another question is, how many people here that dislike OLED actually experience issues with it, and how many have other agendas?

Not like this year. Burn-in threads have vanished
I'll tell you though, after all this talk, I'm making backup plans for a XR exchange. That seems like a great option, if there's an issue.

The eye strain issue is real, these OLEDs do use PWM to control brightness. But, only a small sample of people actually *get* eyestrain from use. Its quite different from having a much larger field of vision taken up by the screen like a monitor, shouldn't let it stop you from getting the phones unless you have personal experience of it with mobiles.

To those people who have issues with OLED to them this type of screen is not better than an LCD due to medical reasons their eyes are “oversensitive” and not because they can see colors better than someone else, this is laughable.
Technically that does not take away that OLED produces deeper richer colors, deeper blacks and much less saturation, and everything displaymate pointed out.
OLED is better than LCD, If it wasn’t why are they not selling LCD TV’s all over the world? LCD is Older technology. OLED & 4K is the hottest products for top tier TV’s.
So for those whose eyes are sensitive to OLED please don’t try to come here and tell us that LCD is better. It is for you personally we agree, but not on specs, and that’s the facts. You just don’t have the ability to enjoy it, it’s not the masses it’s the few who have this problem.

I'm surprised no one brought this X upgrade up. To me one of the big upgrades for X over XR is the stainless steel band over aluminum. The stainless steel is more durable against scratches and dings. Steel doesn't bend as easily. The silver stainless is repairable because you can polish it. You can't polish satin finish aluminum. I think the polished look is way better. This is big to me.

To each their own. I personally hate shiny metal products like the band on the iPhone Xs. I know Apple does it to try and make it look premium, but to me it looks cheap. I’d much rather have a brushed band similar to the look of stainless steel appliances.
Fair enough. I asked my friend to try this who claims to suffer headaches from his X.
He didn't want to bother testing at all with this. I'm curious if this has worked for anyone though.
