since the bootcamp 2.1 updates are different for xp, vista x32, and vista x64---what would be the best thing to do if I wanted to upgrade my existing xp to vista x64? Should I install the vista upgrade, then run the boot camp upgrader..or vise versa?

I think you should install boot camp for vista 64, then do an upgrade to vista x64... this should work.

You can't upgrade from XP 32bit to Vista 64bit directly. You'll have to format/reinstall.
