I ordered the iPhone 5 online via Apple just now under my dad's AT&T account (but on my credit card). The plan is for me to upgrade to it, and give him my 4S.

His plan seems attached to the phone though (it's all over the order), and his plan is different from mine (I have unlimited data). Is that going to be a problem when I try to attach the phone to my number / account?

It would really suck if I get the phone, go to AT&T to switch it to my account, and I discover that I lost my unlimited data. Please let me know ASAP if I screwed up so I can cancel the order and do it differently if I have to!!

Thanks... :)

You're getting an upgrade swap. There are lots of threads detailing what to do. Bottom line: Don't worry. I did it for the iPhone 4 from iPhone 3GS because I gave the iPhone 3Gs to my son. Now he'll be getting the iPhone 4. :)

I also have retained (grandfathered) Unlimited Data while my son wasn't able to get it.

The ATT guy/gal will attach your plan to the iPhone that you ask them to. Don't turn the new iPhone ON until you give it to the ATT person; let them do it.

When you receive the phone, drop by an AT&T store and let them handle it. This will allow you to also pick up a nano-sim and sort out any problems you might encounter.

The upgrade swap is easy and if for any reason they mess up, they will re-instate it. (Might take a week or so)

BUT!

I would advise you to periodically check your plan in regards to the data plan.

Thanks. I stress over this stuff.

Don't worry. I'm in the same boat. I ordered the upgrade for my son but I'm keeping the iPhone 5 this Friday and he will get the 4S from me and I have the unlimited data plan. To avoid the rush, I stopped by the local ATT store today and told them my situation.
The guy asked my phone number to pull-up my account and after scanning, gave me two new sim cards (One nano sim and one micro sim card). He said, pull the card from the new iPhone 5 and replace it with this new nano sim they gave me and replace the new micro sim into my exisiting 4S then and call them to activate or bring them in and they will do it for me.
So no worries.

Hold on, doesn't the iPhone 5 come with the nano sim card? So all you'd have to do is call and tell them the nano sim card number that came with the iPhone 5 and tell them what number you want that to be associated with? I'm just wondering why they gave you SIM cards.

Also question. So I'm planning on selling one of my iPhone 5 upgrade. How do I sell it(unopened)? If the new buyer turns on the phone, it'll automatically activate my number right? How do I prevent this?

This is a good point. I've heard so many different things that I don't know what I can believe. I want to just call the customer service line and tell them to attach my number to the new nano sim instead of my dad's and be done with it, but I don't know if that'll work anymore.
