URGENT! iMac frozen boot-up

My iMac just crashed. All apps except finder gave me the beach ball, and force quit wouldn't load.

I cold-booted it and it is now stuck on the screen showing the apple logo and the pin wheel, except the pin-wheel doesn't spin!

HELP, My dad is asleep now and I don't want to wake him :s

I tried booting into single user mode, holding down X to force mac os boot up but i'm getting nothing at all!

Try booting from the system DVD and repairing permissions.

I tried booting it into safe mode. Took ages, but worked. Then restarted and it works now!
