So im at the apple store and decided on buying the macbook pro. I don't like the new keyboard and the guy said he could order me a refurb mbp for cheaper and the only big difference was a minimal upgrade. What should I do?

Thats entirely up to you my friend.

Don't make a snap decision without knowing all the facts.

If you are thinking of buying the previous generation model, consider getting it new at a college store especially if you are associated with the college. UCLA for example has had the previous gen macbook pro for 1100 or 1200 depending on the model.

Wasn't a minor update.

All new chipset (switch from Intel to Nvidia), and an all new case.

Id personally go with the new model for the new construction alone, everything else is gravy.
