oke. I have put the iPhone in DFU mode, iTunes is now downloading iOS 8.0.2 and restoring

fingers crossed! :D

It sounds like a blacklisted iPhone to me, and the Verizon rep just doesn't want to outright tell you that. Try to return the phone if you can.

It's probably doesn't work because the ebay guy bought the phone, didn't open the box, and then he cancelled his Verizon contract. That's why the phone's sealed but can't activated. Hence it's blacklisted (Bad ESN).

Correct me if I'm wrong but even if the Verizon iPhone has a bad ESN shouldn't he still be able to use the phone with T-Mobile or AT&T?

I think verizon would first have to flash/unlock the phone (remove from blacklist/ clear esn/imie) before it can be activated on another network CDMA or GSM since iphone 6 has both radios(I think). Im not entirely sure so someone else with more knowledge should chime in.

Unauthorized device messages means the device has not gone through a point of sale. All iPhones need to be sold in order to activate. This device was stolen and not paid for. Not even apple can fix this. Return the device and get your money back.

This.....From what I understand, apple devices and serial numbers go through an internal activation as they move from the mfg to the distributor, then again when they are sold to each carrier. The final authentication is done at POS from carrier to customer.

thanks for all your input so far.

I just came back from an Apple Store here in NYC. The people at the Store said it can be used in Europe (where I live) with my GSM simcard. Two seperate employees confirmed this.

But now when I read all the last comments here, I am not even sure thats true what the people at the Store told me

edit:

I just checked if the iPhone is being stolen. It has a clear ESN and not reported as stolen

Please double check. Verizon phones can be activated with blank sim cards (from either Verizon, T-Mobile or AT&T). You should not, under any circumstance, get the unauthorized device message.

You can pop in the Verizon sim the device came with, go to iTunes and skip account information and it will activate with no service allowing you to go into the home screen.

If the device does not let you activate with the sim card it came with there's a problem with the activation policy. Even then, the device would show "invalid sim" and not "unauthorized device."

I just don't want you to return to Europe and have the same issue. At that point even Apple Retail in your country will not be able to help you as you bought the device in the US.

Listen to what IndoX informed us of above.
The ESN might be clean but the phone might be completely banned from ever getting activated anywhere.
Up to you if you want to risk it but you might be stuck with a brick that you will never be able to use on any network anywhere.
Might have been stolen before it was even sold to anyone and thus nothing that can be done to activate it.

This.

Some Apple stores like to showcase the new devices out in the open by having stock readily available somewhere on the sales floor.

Since launch weekend is usually very hectic it is not uncommon for some people to try and swipe some devices while specialists are busy.

If the device has not been sold, it's ESN will still be clean and the device will not be blacklisted.

Absolutely get your money back. This device will never ever activate anywhere. It's done.

Don't waste any more time. Just file the eBay claim.

Piping in to say I've bought "Verizon" full-price iPhone 5s before. They come unlocked. Pop in any SIM, the iPhone works. And that is what should be happening for you here in the U.S. Pop in any nanoSIM -- T-Mobile, ATT, Verizon, Sprint, smaller players -- and when you power the phone, it should be operating.

Something definitely is wrong, and this has nothing to do with your physical location.

yea but he went to the apple store. wouldn't they be like "hey wait a second here" when they saw the error message?

@ IndoX

thanks for your input! very kind

I tried all that, still no succes.

It is so strange that 2 different Apple Geniuses told me here in NYC that it will work in Europe (activating the iPhone)
