US iPhone For Someone In The UK?

Does anyone know if I can buy a iPhone as a gift for someone in the UK and they just activate it when the start selling them there?

U.S. iPhones are locked to AT&T whereas U.K. iPhones will be locked to O2, so the answer is no.

Why not just buy it from the UK store and have it sent as a gift? Because you're trying to skirt taxes and the higher price of a UK iPhone? Is the person who is getting this "gift" going to compensate you in any way? If so, my urge is to hit that little red triangle.

No, I'm visiting the UK next week and wanted to pick one up at the apple store and give it to him as a gift and I thought he could activate it when they started selling them in the UK. Not trying to skirt any taxes- I would declare it and pay any duty on the phone when I bring it in the country.

If that's the case, it wouldn't have mattered, because the plans won't be available until launch. Either way, I still have a hard time buying the whole "gift" idea.

when the UK one comes out, will there be any way to put the UK baseband on the USA iphone, so in effect, i have an activatable UK iPhone?
