Could our current MBP be upgraded via a software update or is this a hardware issue?
Or Thunderbolt to USB 3.0 converter, which does not exist yet
Short answer, nope
it would require hardware that supports USB 3.0
Apple will support USB when Intel puts it in their chipset. Currently Intel doesn't put USB 3.0 in their chipset.
If you really need it, buy a Mac Pro and install this from Sonnet.
it's a hardware issue, or at least till someone makes a thunderbolt to USB3 adaptor... I think thunderbolt is the only port that is fast enough to do this and maintain USB3 speeds.
if u don't wanna buy a mac pro
disclaimer: hope u have a ExpressCard slot on ur MBP
The expresscard34 2.0 slot in the 17" MBP's is fast enough too. You'll get the full USB 3.0 speed with a proper card.
