My iMac has 2.0 usb ports. If I buy a 3.0 usb hub will it pass through at 3.0 or does the computer also need 3.0?

USB 3 is compatible with USB 2 ports, so why wouldn't it work? It will just run at USB 2 speeds

Some 3 hubs draw too much power for 2 ports, have an extra connection/impediment that makes them unable to fit in 2 ports, or just won't be recognized by a 2 host.
