I haven't seen any devices using 3.0. They may exist, but it's so new that it'll probably take a year to filter down and/or be worth the extra cost. I don't even know if any PCs use 3.0 yet.

So I think you'll be OK even when 3.0 does come out. The devices will be backward-compatible, so it's not like you'll be forced to use old stuff.

Ordered an i7 15 inch last night.

I was just being paranoid about spending so much money on a computer. I do these kinds of things before I buy any Apple product.

They could have at least put eSATA in those new Macbook Pros to hold you over. USB 3 devices will come and seems silly to spend over two grand on a computer with limited I/O. Lightpeak will come, too, and I guess that's the game with Mac. Deprive deprive and then finally release it as if its the 2nd coming.

It's always like this with apple, you love them and you hate them... If only osx would be available on other pc hardware without hackintoshing, and someone made as good designs as apple, huh?
One can always dream...

Hehe too true, but I think I would feel a bit left out for not having a totally real McCoy ;)

Speaking of Quads and Logic, for someone getting the Mac partly due to wanting to step into the sound design arena and Logic Studio being the suite recommended by people to me, how necessary would a Quad core be? I'm looking at EchoLab as my inspiration (love their stuff, I do mograph so this seems a natural progression).

For your needs, do you reckon HyperThreading will help you out enough?

I wonder when Intel might release 35w tdp quaddies to Apple... hmmm one can hope before 2011... darn this waiting game! How much do people usually recoup from selling their old MBPs in the UK?? I may have to grab one now but only if the things have good sale potential for later

Current gen will be more than enough for you. Last gen would be good enough too. I'd say get an i5 and be happy!

I was starting to get maxed out with a 2 year old core2duo 2.5ghz, but i'm using a ton of cpu-heavy plugins(high quality guitar and drum modeling etc on many tracks simultaniously), So after studying the benchmarks i'll reckon i'm gonna get close to a 50% boost with this one and it should be enough to last me another 1-2years unless something new really cpu-heavy comes out that i want to get. Problem is, if they offered a quad core version, I wouldnt even have to think about this, and now I have been pondering ever since they released the new models

I'm still torn between waiting for new mac pros or getting the i7 17", maybe I should flip a coin :D

I suppose it depends on what you want. A low-spec current Mac Pro would probably give you as much performance as you need for a couple of years, plus you have the advantage that you can stick PCI cards for USB 3 and things like that in it if you need to. However it's impossible to lug about.

If you want a luggable desktop laptop then the 17" is great seeing as it has the ExpressCard slot and a large high-res screen, plus if you reckon the chips will be enough for you then that could be a go-er.

I personally doubt we'll see a Quad core in any of the models apart from the 17" in the future, just simply because having a Quaddie with Hyperthreading but only 8GB of RAM is a waste of processing power for a lot of applications. I doubt it's possible to squeeze in another 8GB into the current form factor on the 15", but perhaps the 17" could happen. Pure speculation of course.

I agree with pretty much everything you just said, but it's still a tough desicion and I won't be getting the current mac pro because its 13 months old with same price it was back then. Apple tax or no, thats in no way a justified purchase.

I'm gonna decide in the next few days if i get the mbp, if not then i'll wait for new macpro

Not to worry, but it's not a lot of money if you constantly sell and upgrade every year. Think of it as self-financed leasing. Apple computers hold their value a lot longer than PCs so might as well take advantage of that fact.

I've been waiting for the new MP too, and now wondering if we'll see it any time soon. I would have though that NAB would be the perfect time to push it out. Now I'm thinking Apple is going to let the current model go to 2011, similar to how they let the original MP go a couple years w/o a sig. update. It frustrates me because my '06 is getting really long in the tooth.

I'm trying to remember back to USB2.0's introduction. If I remember right, it was quite a few months before any mainstream devices (cameras, MP3 players, etc.) started to take full advantage of the speeds. So by that regard, even though USB3.0 is technically out now, it will probably be a while until manufacturers fully support it. Many devices don't even necessarily require USB3, so manufacturers may stay with the lesser tech to save money.

I can see external HDDs going USB 3.0 fairly quick, but other than that? Maybe portable media players to eventually follow? 6 months maybe?

Sounds about right which means that those who are not planning on upgrading their MBPs withing 6 months are kind of screwed.

I suppose, but on the flip side of that, this means they will also have to purchase a ton of USB 3.0 devices in 6 months and I really don't think there are going to be too many "must have" 3.0 devices.. unless you're, say, a video editor or otherwise.

Single magnetic drives can't saturate the entire 5 Gbps theorhetical bus. Not saying us power users cannot make use of it via striped disks and SSD arrays but, for the small number of users who can realize such benefits, the 17 inch is always an option. I know, I know, you can't squeeze into a 13" space with a 17" machine but it is what it is. My jaw hit the floor when the spec sheet said nothing about USB 3.0 but considering I haven't seen an enclosure in the wild except once, I doubt the extra premium would be worth it from a business perspective.
