Apogee dumped USB 2.0 for Firewire on their Mini DAC ($900 DAC), I have one. Duet is also FW only. That tells you something about USB.

I say go for a 2.4GHZ BlackBook. I see it for about $1100 NEW on Ebay. That's a steal! I would get one if I didn't already have a white one. :D
If muisc is important to you, it is to me, you should not be sold by Apple on the "new" MB. There is nothing new about them besides the track pad, GPU and casing. It's almost a downgrade if you use it for music production.

Really? The impression I've been getting from these forums is that you need FW for decent audio recording.

So a MacBook with USB interface could handle 6 to 10 tracks?

Polaris is confusing tracks with channels.

Edit: On second thought, and after rereading Polaris' post, i think you're the one confusing things.
Anyway, yes, most things can be done on USB. The question is, whether you can live with the workarounds to do it properly and live with the lesser quality.

Most likely! :D I'm still very new to this, basically want to record drum loops, bass, rhythm and lead guitar + overdubs and vocals. Just using it for demos and as a hobby, so I can deal with less than stellar quality as long it doesn't sound like a transistor radio :)
