No, I get mine with an defect Harddrive. So I have to install it on an second USB Drive. Your SATA don´t get hurt.
 
and i switched to the messed up hard drive from my Powermac g5

A much more reliable way to boot from USB is to "burn" the image to the flash drive. In Disk Utility, you would use the "restore" function to "restore" the image to the desired volume.
