Hello!

System : mac mini 2018 i5 16Mb 256g SSD
Problem :

I have used this mac mini 2018 for more monthes without problem in big sur. After updating to monterey, several crashes I should experience and it is more and more often. So I decide to downgrade to big sur.

mac mini 2018 firmware was revived and restored by apple configurator 2 and Mojave was installed without problem. But security update with mojave doesn't work at all. So I try to install big sug manually.

In order to clean install big sur from mojave, I have prepared bootable USB, which works perfect with my second mac mini 2014. But with mac mini 2018 , when I select MacOS installer after pressing Opt. Booting with external device is already selected by recovery mode. NVRAM/SMC Reset was done also. But it crashes continusouly, if I try to boot with usb.

But when I go to recovery mode by command+opt+R, I can see "install Big Sur" on the list and it seems to be installed when I click it. But when the progress goes to mid of the bar (still in recovery mode before the apple logo apears), it crashes again.

Something interesting is that USB flash does not appear on the startup disk. Is it normal?

Somebody can help or advise me, what I can try further to solve this problem?

Thank you !

Any mac system, sometimes can be stuck on the Black screen and become unresponsive. There can be various reasons for this issue such as:

1. Display issue
2. Battery issue
3. Software/App causing the error
4. Broken Disk permission
5. macOS incompatibility

However, to fix the issue, you can try the below methods:

1. Check the power
2. Restart the MacBook system
3. Reset the PRAM/NVRAM
4. Reset the SMC
5. Reinstall the macOS

Hope it helps!

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your tips. As I have described above I have tried almost all methods you have introduced. Black screen doesn't mean complete black without txt but this restart message like in the attachment.

It is very strange for me.

When it is set to "Disallowed booting from external media" by the recover mode, then I can boot up with USB and they should the sign that startup allowance with external media is needed.

But after I set it to "Allow booting from ext. media" by the recovery mode and boot with USB after pushing Opt and select USB, it crashes.

I have really no idea, what is going on with my Mac mini....

Update : I have installed Ubuntu on bootable USB and could boot from USB.

Update : Memetest86 result is also clear. (4/4 Test took about 3 hours.)
