I'd much prefer a dongle with a USB-C power in, a video out, and a USB-C data connection. If I'm getting new USB-C cables for my stuff, anyway, I'm going all in.

That's exactly my thinking and what I want.

Actually, it states:

Code:
29W USB-C Power Adapter specifications:
• Frequency: 50 to 60 Hz, single phase
• Line Voltage: 100 to 240 V
• Output Voltage: 14.5 V DC, 2.0 A [COLOR="Red"]or 5.2 V DC, 2.4 A[/COLOR]

So it can be used to charge other USB devices (like iPhones/iPads) if you have the right cable.

This is really good news, but the question still remains, Can an iPad charger charge the Macbook?

Good work. To do the math, 12.48 Watts at 5.2 Volts.

I'm still waiting for a USB C to Lightning cable...

Actually i already carry around a TB-vga adapter for my rMBP so I will be carrying 2 (fairly small) adapters instead of 1. The whole package - rMB & 2 adapters & power supply - is much smaller and lighter than my current travel setup. I might even be tempted to leave the ipad at home - i need osx mainly for database and spreadsheet work (i use an iMac in the office)

I have been carrying around video adapters for Mac laptops for many years. I was pleased to see the HDMI port on the rMBP but can live without it.

It would be convenient to piggyback adapters on the rMB but it is not a deal-breaker if this is not possible.

OK - I now have my 2 Apple USB-C adapters and they cannot be piggyback. The rMB and iPhone show not charging and the USB drive is not recognised

An unpowered USB2 hub works fine when plugged into a single Apple adapter.
So it look like I have have to carry around a USB hub as well as the adapters :(

I wonder if the AV adaptor plus a USB to Ethernet adapter work?

do you have one to test?

Just to point out that Apple cables are not produced to a high standard - I have about half a dozen iPhone cables (including Lightning) that are frayed because Apple cheaps out on them. I wouldn't buy any USB-A/C crossover from Apple if they produce one. Monoprice is so much higher quality at a far better price.

Give it a few months and more accessories at better prices will pop up.

It's not so much that Apple's cables are cheap as the fact that someone at Apple decided that cable strain relief was ugly and went for slim, pretty cables with no reinforcement.

Yes, that is true, I just lost the words for "strain relief." But that is exactly the problem and it amazes me Apple keeps producing this crap as is.

So, it's difficult to understand :

With the apple hub (HDMI / usb c / usb) :
can we charge an ipad on the usb ? And an Iphone ?
can we plug a hdd on the usb type c ? (when we have the correct cable)
can we charge the rMacbook if we plug it to an other usb (with the correct adaptor : usb => usb c), if i want to plug the rMacbook on a regular macbook air or an imac ?

Yes. The USB-A port works like any other normal USB-A port.

No. The USB-C port is for power ONLY.

Yes, but be aware that charging is very slow; it is good for maintaining & drawing power, and under heavy load, it's possible it may not charge the battery at all. If you need a faster or reliable charge, use the supplied 29W power adapter.

Yeah it's pretty annoying that the USB-C on the Apple adapter can only be used for charging. Does anyone have any idea why they would do this? Any technical reasons for it?

One of the engineers from one of the USB Type C docks on Kickstarter posted on a thread here yesterday, and suggested that there are no production quality USB 3.1 hub chipsets yet, they are still in development. That would suggest that Apple couldn't yet put a hub inside these dongles, which is what would be required to have two USB ports providing data access.

Oh ok thanks I guess I missed that.

I have been on the lookout for USB-C adapters and accessories, besides what Apple is offering. Mostly, I have been looking for some sort of dock that I can just leave on my desk. So far, this is what I have found:

HydraDock - This is actually exactly what I was looking for in a dock, but I have never heard of these guys and I would be a little nervous buying from an unknown company.

MonoPrice - I have purchased a lot of cables from them in the past, usually pretty good quality. Hopefully they'll start offering more in the future.

Google - These look like a pretty good option.

Anything else out there?

I have had no luck finding a USB-C to HDMI or the VGA version. Without those I cannot use my 1.3 macbook for customer presentations. With my two week return limit looming, I called Apple support to see if I can get an extension on returning this thing should I not have one by May 15th. They say they make exceptions for 30 days but wont send that in writing. I have been on the fence with this thing, I hate to return given its a 1.3 but its a $1,700 paperweight for me at this point.

I know Apple has thought of everything for those who just surf the web or pay out the nose in monthly fees for online storage etc.

The CS rep told me that they never had the adaptors but they are due in the next few weeks. This was definitely a bad move on Apples part. Sucks

Can you just go to an apple store. People on here have said that they don't have them on display, but if you force someone to actually check their inventory, they do have them.

Apple TV?

You could pick up an Apple TV from any Apple shop for cheaper than the HDMI connector... Only 1080p but more than good enough for the odd sales pitch.

And it's ridiculous to start your pitch by: can we plug this, this and this, could you connect this to your wired network, can i have access to your wireless? Hope they are on the same vlan.

Seriously! We need ability to get easily:
Hdmi
Vga
Ethernet
One big apple adapter will do the trick!

Yes, I think.

I purchase an USBC cable with a USBA male end on it to attempt to plug it into my USB Hub.

What happened was this:

The USB Hub has a 5 V output and the 12" rMB recognized the power coming from it and began to charge. How fast is anyone's guess because I didn't wait to find out if it would fully charge.

What I did find out is a USBC adapter from the rMB is required to plug it into any external USB hub device.
