Do you have a source supporting your assertion the bezels were Apple's contribution?

Well 4k/5K USBC LG monitors do not have thick bezels on the top, left, or right of the monitors.
Apple "works with LG", using LG monitors, to make 2 LG branded monitor.
Both those monitors have large uneven bezels.

In the keynote Phil Schiller says "they worked together on" the LG Ultrafine display.
Around 27 minutes in.

It is not exactly a genius deduction

Why does it say currently unavailable in the U.K. Apple Store for the LG 5K? I'm itching to buy it but can't seem to order? I know it says available December but I thought others have ordered?

Agreed, 34inch is really the upper limit for a desktop use...
I use a 55" curved Samsung TV and a 27" LED Cinema Display, but the TV is several feet back. It's pretty amazing, actually.

I don't understand the attraction of curved TVs, curved computer displays even less so. It reminds me of the geometry settings you used to have to use to eliminate as undesirable on CRT displays.

Still amazing to think how many pixels these things are packing regardless, my first computer was usually at 320x256 on a 14 inch TV...

I am in no way ready to buy any of these right now, but I quite fancy the idea of a nice big 4K display wall-mounted and simulataneously hooked up to a mac and a 4K UHD BD player one day... (even better if it could be the same machine, but probably not).
Curved is nice for large displays. When you turn your head to the extreme sides of the screen, it aims a little bit toward you, whereas with a flat panel the angle would be facing away, making it more difficult to read. Again, this is effective for large displays. It is pretty gimmicky for smaller displays in my opinion.

I love that MacBook stand—the mStand by Rain Design, right? I have a similar setup at home but with an older 27" IPS display that isn't retina. I wish my mid-2012 rMBP could run 4K at 60Hz…sigh. As for my work setup, I wish it was that clean! I mean, it's not too messy and I could clean it, but it has probably gotten a little out of hand with STUFF. I've got 13x19" prints of my photography work and family plastering the walls. On my desk there are toy dinosaurs, legos, nerf guns, and random gadgets.

Yea it's the mStand. I love it and it functions as a heat sink which is a plus.

Had the LG 27UD88 since July and loving it. Got it originally for my 12 inch MacBook and it was a good combo. I sold my MacBook to get the new MacBook Pro and with the monitor I've had no complaints about it.

LG 27UD88 is the way to go. Works great with my mid 2014 rMBP. It’s future proof w/ the single USB-C port too. 60Hz w/ mini display to display port makes it a great companion monitor.
I believe the new RMBP could support 2 of these @ 60Hz - but what’s the point of having a touch bar if your going to dock the laptop and use the two monitors.

I would think Apple would be somewhat embarrassed that the MacBook Pro can now run more 4K displays than a Mac Pro. But they still have a typo on the Mac Pro "Buy It Now" page so.....
Sadly....its unfortunate. This happens because Apple refuse to allow users to upgrade internally.

It would be nice if the original article include PPI data for each monitor.

Any of the 3840x2160 4K displays at 27" are 163 PPI (that's the same PPI as an iPhone 3G for reference)
The 38" LG wide display is just 110 PPI
The Acer 27" display is 108 PPI

The new LG UltraFine displays are exact matches with the iMacs:

21.5" 4K is 4096x2304 and is 218 PPI (what Apple considers "Retina" on a Mac)

27" 5K is 5120x2880 and is 217 PPI (also Retina like the 5K iMac)

I'm coming from an Apple Thunderbolt Display. From what we've used (also priced in the $1k range), the LG design is unacceptable. I'll never understand why they couldn't just give us the iMac sans computer (same connectors too). I say unacceptable, but I'll be buying it anyway lol.

Who else finds it strange that the sale price is good only for December, but the display is only available for sale in December. I hope they don't sell out too quick.

I couldn't agree more. I still don't believe that Apple is out of the display business. There was never an official announcement or anything. The new MBP launch needed a companion display no question and I am hoping that Apple was simply stuck between a rock and a hard place and weren't able to offer their own solution in time...

Been using a 27" TBT for years and if Apple doesn't come out with an acceptable replacement soon I'm going to find a clean used 6-core nMP and hide under a rock for a few years until I'm forced to move on to whatever future they are trying to force their pro users to live with.

I bought mine in college when I had a smaller desk setup. I spent about an hour slowly bending it so the angle is less shallow and the gap underneath is taller so I could type on the keyboard while it was underneath the stand. Worked pretty good!

Can you imagine it? A 27" TB3 display in space gray!? Except instead of the crap LG is pushing with only USB-C ports, put everything that's included on the back of the 5k iMac (TB3 ports instead of TB2). A single cable to plug into the new MBPs! I'm so torn on buying the new LG 5k. I don't know how I'd react if I bought that only to have Apple release a new TB display. If anything, I'm going to hold out until the new iMacs come out. At $1800, I'll spend the premium and just get the base 5k iMac and run it in target display mode (assuming it'll provide power to my MBP).

Not sure if I'm the only one, but a 23-24" monitor is best for my desk space, yet the options seem really limited. Are there any good recommendations for a 4k/UHD monitor at this size? Right now, the Samsung U24E590 seems like the only viable balance of looks and performance.

Every time there's Apple news, I appreciate my Hackintosh more and more.

Ditto. Just wish we had support for Nvidia's 1000 series cards :p

Buy a PC like the $3000 SurfaceBook that can't even handle 5K, running Windows which can't yet handle HiDPI correctly.

Nice straw man. I forgot that the Surface Book / Studio is the only option in the PC world. /s

For people who use the pen this is actually a lot cheaper than a Cintiq as the Cintiq costs the same but doesn't come with the computer part, it is a display only. That is who the Surface Studio is aimed at.

And, so far, it's always worked. If I had more time and less money, I'd be quite inclined to try my hand at the Hackintosh game...

They're pretty easy to setup these days and they function pretty much exactly like a real mac would. The only limitation I'm aware of is that you can't use FileVault on most systems unless you're using this new bootloader that actually runs out of the motherboard's EFI rom.

I'm with you on the Ethernet interface thing, and I think you nailed it when you said Apple eliminated it for thinness reasons. Given TB3's increased bandwidth (heck, even TB2 would do!), I Apple or someone else comes out with a 10GBE adapter.

They already exist:
https://www.cdw.com/shop/products/P...-Ethernet-Adapter-network-adapte/3429938.aspx
https://www.akitio.com/adapters/thunder2-10g-network-adapter

They're just really freaking expensive...

A curved large computer display I can understand - when the display is large enough, close enough, that it extends to the edges of your vision, it makes sense for eye-focus and viewing angle reasons.

But a computer monitor is almost always viewed by a single person, who can make sure they are in the "sweet spot" of the curvature. A TV is often watched by multiple people, not always sitting exactly in front of the center of it. Not only do you have actual LCD technology viewing angle problems, but the curve causes actual physical viewing angle problems for people sitting toward the sides. (In my living room, one of the easy chairs is far enough to the side that a curved TV would be literally unwatchable from it. Yeah, it's not the greatest position for a conventional flat TV, but you can watch the TV at least.)

I love the 38! Just wish it was 5K!
I wonder if I should hold out or buy the 34 for £750.
Will I be able to drive it with an AMD5770, (not to its native resolution of course)? I’m assuming the OS will upscale/downscale accordingly.

Q. What do I need to use a 4k 27" DELL (P2715Q) at 4k@60Hz with the new Macbook-Pro?
A. USB-C to Display-Port should work.

So does that mean that 5k monitors such as the Dell UP2715k can be run via MST using two USB/C to DP dongles from the MBP(2016)?
