Well, I have a "Sandisk Extreme Pro SD UHS-II" USB-C card reader.
It seems to not work at all, as it does not recognize any of my SD cards.

Nothing happens when I insert it. Its visible in the "System info" under USB. Nothing else.

If I reboot with the reader and a card inserted, the MacBook starts up, but act weird and end up with a "blue screen" restart. (Not sure what the term is on a Mac).

The reader works fine on my PC. The cards work fine on my iPad (with a SD-lightning reader).
Luckily I can manage by connecting my camera with a cable for now, but hopefully this will be fixed...

Is this due to lack of updated device drivers for ARM?

I have one of these too, but with the USB3-Type A connector.

This would be a deal-breaker for me because I would need it to import photos and video.

Have you tried contacting Samsung tech support?

This is likely to be a macOS Big Sur bug which Apple should fix in one of its updates. Someone in another forum I frequent has reported the same thing. And another member reported a problem with Micro SD cards not being recognized, again he was running Big Sur.

The Apple version of the SD card reader works fine
Good to know, but we still need a fix for non-Apple USB devices, of which there are millions!

It surprises me that a USB-C device that requires no drivers does work out of the box. I wonder if it due to the USB implementation or the SD-card reader part of the adapter?

I also find it odd that none of the reviews from video editors have mentioned this. The Samsung SD-card readers are quite common.

It's not much help but my Anker 2-in-1 USB-C card reader works, as does a Transcend TS-RDF9K2 with a USB-C to Micro-B 3.1 Gen2 cable.

My M1 Mac shipped, I check a my Sandisk card reader (same as @JohnMagnus) - working perfectly with any cards (Sandisk, Wise, Kingston). No issues.
