I've got a G-technology USB-C external drive that is capable of providing power delivery and data (from its own storage) to my M1 Macbook Air. The problem I'm having is that when I put my OWC travel dock between the drive and my laptop, I only get power. The drive is not visible at all. Is this normal? Are there any USB-C (or Thunderbolt) docks that will pass power AND data over the same port?

Is the drive bus powered or externally powered? If it's bus powered, the travel hub may not be providing enough power for the laptop and the drive, thus you're not seeing the drive's data.

The drive has its own power brick, and is supposed to provide up to 45w of power for an attached laptop.

I contacted OWC support and they confirmed that the travel dock does NOT pass data and power. The USB-C input only functions for power delivery.

In my reply email I asked for a list of devices that do support PD and data, but still haven't gotten a response.

I use this USB-C-multi port hub from UNI to transfer data while charging with an iPP 11” 2020 and a M1 Macbook. The power supply I use offers PD and the hub passes everthing thru while providing access to SD cards, Ethernet, external SSDs and HDs, etc.

I use the Black Box USB-C dongle dock on a 2020 MBP, M1 Mac Mini, and will be used for the new M1 iMac.

It passes power and data:
