Before back-lit keyboards were common on Macs I had a small USB-powered led light on a flexible stalk which I could aim at my Powerbook's keyboard. Does anyone know if something like this still exists that I could use with the regular Keyboard Folio?

Me too - same one! I have not seen any USB-C lights. I've been using Mighty Lights, this one currently -

I like the battery or 5V power source option (any standard charger works). This micro USB to USB-C cable would work for powering from a USB-C port -

I was thinking about that but then due to that cable being flexible the light wouldn't stand up on its own. You'd need a solid converter dongle.
 
Would using a USB 3 -> USB C adaptor allow using your old light? Something like this:
