iPad Pro USB C port to connect external drives?

I have a first generation iPad and would consider a new one if I can connect external storage like an external drive. Can you use the USB C port to access file and transfer them?

Yes.
You can also do this on older Lightning port iPads using an Apple accessory dongle that gives you a USB-A port.
