I bought a USB-C to displayport cable and plugged into my 2017 rMBP, it worked for a while, then stopped working. If you open the "Display" system preference, there is the external monitor, but the display is blank. Actually, the monitor shows something connected, then went to sleep.

Similar problems were reported https://apple.stackexchange.com/que...nal-monitor-black-screen-usb-c-to-displayport, but nobody has a working solution. In my case, reset the SMC, and then reboot with display connected, sometimes it works.

Suspecting this is more like a software problem and more related to displayport, since usb-c to HDMI works reliably, and I saw this on displaylink.com.

10.13.4 broke displaylink. There is no fix after 3 months to get displaylink to work with macs (this existed through the betas). Displaylink have a driver that clones the display only. As of today the only manner to get extended monitors to function by displaylink is to return to 10.13.3. There is a long thread over at the display link forums. There has been no official response from Displaylink for over a month on what, if anything that they are doing and if there is ever any prospect of the devices ever working with a Mac again the way they used to. By the sounds of it I wish you luck returning to 10.13.3.

This is a "work" machine so I cannot control the OS version. Looks like a work-around would be to use a USB-C to DVI cable.
