So I just purchased a iPad Pro 11” and went to back up my current iPad and realized that I don’t have USB C on my 2015 MacBook Pro. I know the cable that comes with the iPad Pro is USB C to USB C but was wondering if a USB C to USB A cable would work to restore and sync the iPad with my MacBook. Does anyone have any experience with this?

I was looking at this cable:

https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Type-C-USB-Male-Cable/dp/B01GGKYN0A?th=1

Anyone know if it will work?

It should. I use a similar USB-A to USB-C cable with a hard drive on my laptop (the HDD being USB-C) and it works without any issues. USB-C is an open standard. This cable is like this one that Apple sells -

I just bought that Belkin one Apple sells and call it a day. Not gonna damage a $1400+ device with cheap cables.
With that being said, that cable from amazon should work with iPad Pro. But, despite USB being an open standard, manufacturer can still add “perks” to their ports or protocols to enable extra feature or limit transfer speed based on which cable user is using. One example is when syncing using iTunes, Mac can Utilise almost the maximum speed of USB 2.0 to get data through, while other USB 2.0 devices can only transfer with 30MB/s. Apple cable recharging iPhone using Mac is also noticeably faster than using same cable but charging from PC.

I don't think I'd consider Belkin's product any better than Amazon's. Apple likes Belkin because they're wholly owned by their big supplier Foxconn but many of Belkin's Apple products have proved problematic (their 3.5 mm Audio + Charger dongle being an example) while carrying Apple's premium prices ($80 for a Thunderbolt 3 cable). $30 for a USB-A to USB-C cable is excessive.

I've been using:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CWDX2ZS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Somewhat flaky though. Just got message "unlock iPad to use this accessory" message.
This is the normal behaviour, especially when you upgrade to iOS 11/12 without changing Face ID/Touch ID settings.

But the cable is surprisingly thick and the build quality looks awesome. My initial faith on that cable is pretty high. I did not use it long enough though.

I was just going to say, I’d trust Amazon Basics over Belkin any day. I’ve used products from both manufacturers and have never had an issue with Amazon Basics. Can’t say the same thing for Belkin. Just want to make sure the cable will work and I don’t need an adapter or special dongle to do the same thing, which is backup / restore / sync.

Thank you.

I would trust Belgian over Amazon any day. I have had to return Amazon basics cables that would only work after inserting them multiple times while the Belkin cables worked every time.
