USB drive -- share via mac mini or airport?

I have an old synology that I've been using for local storage. I'm using about 3TB (of 4TB) for local document and media storage. Several DSM issues and the slowness/age of my synology model have got me looking for some alternatives and/or supplements to the NAS.

I have an 8TB USB drive being delivered today. My plan is to migrate my data to the USB drive for more convenient local access. Would I be better off connecting the USB drive to my mac mini OR to my airport extreme? What are the pros/cons for each?

Mac mini if it has usb3 will offer faster access speeds. I'm guessing it's a seagate 8tb if so then defiantly the mini.
