USB external hard drive health check

need to test Hitachi 500GB 2.5 drive. collapses system 3 times (data corrupted) but when i erase it and load with data seems fine.

is there any utility that will do deep diagnostic on USB drive ?
I've Tech Tool Pro 6, but i don't think that works on USB drives.
