I accidentally dropped my MBP and since then, my left USB port doesn't appear to work anymore.
its weird because when I plug my seagate external hard drive in, the lights of the hd come on but my MBP doesn't recognise it, likewise with my iPod, where the battery appears to be charging, but iTunes doesn't recognise my iPod.
Any solution to this?

Check that the pins inside arent bent, because it sounds like the Power ones are present and making contact, but the data pins may not be able to contact the contacts (no pun intended) on the plugged-in devices.

USB Port not working on old MBP

Well they don't look bent. I put a pen inside it to fiddle about with it and bizarrely, it came up with this error message (link)
Anyone know what it means?

What that means is that the pen is allowing a current to flow directly between the power pins of the USB port, causing Mac OS X to see it as drawing too much power (just because a surge has occurred and been detected).
