I can only find a couple of places where people are suggesting that it might be a general problem using and iPhone 4, 4.3 and 4.3.1 and tethering with USB.

A few of us are getting kernel panics on a wide variety of MacBooks and iMacs, and I suspect it's a more or less common problem.

Are many of us getting frequent kernel panics when tethering to an OSX machine with an iPhone 4 and USB?

Yes, same here. I consistently get the issue when tethering over usb.
There's a huge thread about this on Apple Discussions, it's been going on for a long time.

Only workaround so far is to tether over bluetooth.
It sucks that Apple isn't fixing this when you're just using Apple gear with other Apple gear the way it was intented to be used...
Hopefully they'll get to it :)

based on what ive been seeing at the apple discussions, they seem to have narrowed the issue down to macosx 64bit mode --- guys who booted into 32bit mode have not experienced the issue.

hope apple fixes this issue soon...

Yesterday, I switched to 32-bit boot mode on both machines and haven't had a problem since.
