Bearing in mind the problems many are encountering with the camera connection kit after Apple messed about with the ipad's power settings on ios4.2, has anyone come across a list anywhere of what USB thumb drives work with the kit now ?

Failing that, can anyone recommend a USB thumb drive they have which still works ?

Thanks.

Kingston Data Traveler 2GB and 4GB work.

ETA:
The OLD Data Travelers work (solid white case), the NEW Data Traveler 101 4G doesn't work (translucent cases).
See my post below for a picture and details.

Can you tell me exactly which Kingston you are using? I want to buy a cheap USB stick
Both are DataTraveler with opaque cases. I have a brand new 4GB DataTraveler at work that has a different case - I think it is clear. I will try it with the CCK tomorrow and report back and will include the exact model number.

One of the things that has stopped me from getting an iPad is the lack of file structure. I want to be able to access, organize, and move files as it makes sense to me rather than having an app access every file of a certain type.

Can someone please explain how things work with a USB key? Does this only work with a jailbroken iPad? Can one create a file structure on their computer that shows up on a stock iPad? Or, is every file on the USB key visible when it is plugged in and disappears when the USB key is removed?

Thanks in advance.

Mike

With a jailbroken ipad and the camera connection kit (and a USB stick that works, like those listed above), you would use the iFile app which is available on cydia to create folders etc and do pretty much what you want.

If you transfer files from the USB stick to a folder on the ipad's hard drive, they should remain there even when you detach the USB stick and you will be able to access these by going in via iFile.

IMHO, its an app which should be "legalised" and included in the iPad as stock. Its outstanding.

Not very many people jailbreak their iPads, but thanks for the tip. I wasn't aware you could do that. I only use iFile for modifying existing internal files. I usually use ssh to transfer files. I love iFile... it's a very useful tool.

So you have to be jailbroken to use a usb stick w/ yr ipad?

No you don't, but the only thing you CAN do with a stock iPad (non-JB) is pull iPad-supported photo/video files from under a \DCIM folder into an imported pictures folder in the Photos app. You can't pull any other files off the stick and you can't put ANY files onto the stick at all. So no sharing of Pages/Word docs, PDFs, etc with a non-jailbroken iPad.

Data Traveler 4GB old works, new doesn't!

I am shocked to find that the old, opaque case DataTraveler 4GB does work with the CCK but the new, translucent case DataTraveler 101 4GB does not work, giving the "Cannot Use Device... too much power" message. In the following picture, the older top USB drive works but the newer bottom USB drive doesn't work. I tried two Data Traveler 101s with the same result.

I've got an iPad2, 4.3.3, Jailbroken using USB Camera Connection Kit & iFile

Doesn't Work: ~All HAVE Lights~
Ativa 4gb rubber coated w/elastic attached cap
Verbatim 16gb red w/lights in the slider
SanDisk Cruiser 8gb (re-formatted to fat32) black w/lights in the slider
HP 8gb 'folding-knife' grey, no lights!
SanDisk USB/Micro SDHC w/WINTEC 16gb Class 10 SDHC, no lights!

Does Work: ~NONE HAVE Lights~
Kingston DataTraveler 1gb w/loseable plastic cap
? 2gb Leather covering w/magnetic leather strap (got it from a vendor)
? 1gb trade show give-away w/loseable plastic cap

Jus sayin'
Anything other than the Corsair in a FAST 32gb? Looking for something a little more compact.
