It seems that my older mac monitor doesn't have enough power to charge the ipad, I decided to try the Y connector (http://www.amazon.com/USB-Power-Adapter-Y-Cable/dp/B000JIOHDE/ref=pd_cp_e_2)
Sad to say that it doesn't seem to make a difference.
I can also report that my powered usb hub which didn't have enough power still doesn't
By 'not enough power' I mean that I get the 'Not Charging' indicator and yes I know that it will trickle charge, I was just hoping to get the full charge capabilities.
Just my bit to save other folks some money 🙂
