Use Airport express with no internet connection to airplay pandora from iphone 3gs and 4 4.2.1

i basicly need to know how to configure the AE to let the iphone use the cellular data (3G) network instead of trying to get internet from the AE ;)

Thanks in advance

wont work as you will have to connect to the airport express wireless to stream to it.

your iphone will only find your AE when you have wifi turned on and AE is on that network, when you are on 3 g there you can not airplay because you are not on a wifi network and will not find your AE

there is a way i just cant remember how to do it. from what i remember it has to do with the dns setting when your phone trys to access internet thru the AE the AE tells it to use its own (3G but still connected to the AE) because the AE has no internet. i will just use the AE to airplay over the network

I just discovered that if you turn wi-fi off, then launch Pandora (so it uses 3G) then you can turn wi-fi back on (not connected to internet) and Pandora continues to use 3G. I let it play to the end of the first song, then it started another song still using 3G (it must have been, because the AE was not connected to the internet). I started Airplay and it worked, but stopped after the song ended -- after I turned on Airplay and Pandora tried to switch songs, Pandora apparently started trying to use the wi-fi connection for data and died.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

Bingo.

Also even if it worked it's not like you could just take your AE with you and airplay to it. AE needs to be on your net work so you would need your wireless router and an AE.

Use a small Bluetooth device you can plug into an aux input. That's what I do at work

Don't forget that the AE can be it's own network, so you actually can do exactly this. I'm doing it right now. The problem is that while my iPhone or iPad is connected to the AE it won't try to get data over 3G, even if the AE is not connected to the internet.

In fact, that's the point of this whole thread: when connected to the AE, as the hub of your network (but not providing internet), how can you get Pandora to get its data from 3G while you "airplay" to the AE via wi-fi. You have to be connected to both wi-fi and 3G simultaneously, and the devices don't seem to like to do that (though they will, temporarily, as described in my previous post).

But, to reiterate, you definitely can take your AE with you and airplay to it. It's an awesome feature.

I know it can be done it's all about advanced router settings. Just wait and see one of router gurus will be able to tell me how to achieve my goal

Not sure if this'll work, but its worth a try. The iPhone will continue to use the cellular data network if connected to an adhoc network without an internet connection. If the Airport Extreme is also on this network it may be able to Airplay without trying to get internet from it.

The AE is the network it's the only router and there is not a Internet connection I just want to play pandora wirelessly I already par for Internet on my phone

Just a shot in the dark but try manually setting your IP and subnet on the iPhone and leave the router section blank.

It can be done i finally figured it out it's all in the dns settings. It works perfectly. No Internet thru the airport express is needed. Like I said it redirects Internet back to the the 3G of the device. If you need any help email me at chuckcapps@gmail.com

That's great can you post a tutorial here?

i did give this a try. and it does seem to work, but soon as you lose connection due to signal loss or a phone call and it needs to re-buffer. then you lose it and have to turn wifi off again, start the pandora app again then switch over again to wifi and it will continue to play until the next interruption. kinda annoying if you are getting phone calls through out the day. would be nice if it look to pick up the 3g automatically. can't seem to get around this, it works flawless with the ipod app because the ipod app does not look for an internet connection. i can play my ipod and get calls music pauses and continues after i hang up with out a hitch.

Use 3g network through Airport Express to Apple TV 2

I would like to know how to set the DNS to revert the internet back from Airport Express to my iphone so that I can then stream netflix from my iphone to my Apple TV all while driving down the road. Is this possible?

i have gotten this to work somehow with sirius and pandora. but when ever it loses connection and needs to rebuff if looks for the internet connection on wifi which is not there. right now i start up what ever music app i want running and connect on 3g, then i turn the phone to wifi and it picks up the apple express and im able to airplay to it. and the music app will continue to pull from the 3g even though it says it is on wifi, but soon as you break connection it looks to reconnect on the wifi not the 3g.

works fine with ipod obviously because that never looks for internet to stream from

Got this to work perfectly. I can stream from 3g all day and airplay to my airport with out having the internet plugged into it. Pandora, Sirius radio and ipod all work great. you can see it is still connected to 3g even after i turn wifi on and connect to the airport. Can stream to airplay and surf the web and receive all my e mails. All i did was plug in the ethernet cable into the airport and created a new network on the airport. then when you unplug the ethernet cable so there is no internet connection it still lets you connect to the wifi network you created but it can't pull internet because there isn't any plugged into it it continues to pull everything from 3g.

Has anyone tried this last post because I am having the problem of it cutting out every 10 minutes or so

Has anyone figured this out?

My roommate has airport express. We do not have Internet access here. I would like to stream pandora from 3G to the airport express to listen to music. Please help if anyone knows how to make this work!

Solution with no cable swapping needed

I realise this topic is a bit stale, but this is for the benefit of anyone stumbling into this thread from an internet search. This was done with an Airport Extreme, but I expect the relevant settings on the Express would be much the same. In Airport Utility, open up your base station, and select the "Internet" pane. In the "Internet Connection" tab, from the pop-up menu at the bottom titled "Connection Sharing", select "Off (Bridge Mode)". Putting base stations from other manufacturers into bridge mode would probably have exactly the same effect. You may also want to turn off the flashing orange light on your base station - select the "AirPort" pane, and click on the orange spot beside "Status: x items". Check the boxes next to the problems you are quite happy to ignore. On mine the two alerts were "Ethernet Unplugged" and "Internet Connection". Apply the settings and wait for your base station to restart. You'll notice once you've reconnected to your network that the little wifi symbol no longer appears at the top of your iDevice. I hope someone finds this useful.

use iPad iPhone 3G data internet while connected streaming to AirPort wifi wi-fi AirPlay ad-hoc network

I have been able to fool the Airport Express into allowing me to use my 3G connection while simultaneously using AirPlay. HOWEVER, it drops out every 15-30 secs and I have to reconnect.

Anyone else experience this?

Yes, it does the same for me...Any fixes for this?

For anyone who stumbles upon this i found a different solution that i take no credit for.

Connect to your wifi and write down the IP address and subnet mask your router assigned you. Then, select static tab instead of DHCP and fill in the IP address your DHCP server assigned to your iPad. Next, fill in the subnet mask but leave the rest of the fields empty.
You now have access to your wifi as well as 3G.

I tested this using an old belkin router, an iphone4 and a jb ipod touch running airserver. Airplay functions properly and there is still internet access wih the 3g connection. I dont see any reason why it wouldnt work with the AE.
